This is the voluminous catalogue of an exhibition held in Mannheim, Paris and Berlin with 98 contributions of well-known academics from Germany and abroad. It is divided into two main parts namely the origins and characteristics of the Frankish Empire on the one hand and its everyday culture on the other hand. The historical-archaeological first part includes aspects such as the history of research in Germany and France, the Franks as opponents and heirs of Rome, Frankish towns such as Paris, Trier, Cologne, Worms or Tournai, the development from a small kingdom into an empire, the Germanic neighbours, and church and state on their way to the Christian Occident. The more archaeological second part on the material culture considers crafts such as pottery, plaster work, masonry, working of wood, glass, metal, and bone as well as craftwork and objects of art, e. g. made of ivory. Also, the living conditions of people, death, life in houses, farms and villages are dealt with as are the economy, trade, and traffic. This is followed by the catalogue of the pieces shown in the exhibition.
