[Last update: 25.04.2007] [ AMDK 8 ] The Early Bronze Age settlement "Im Oehl III", City of Beilngries, Eichstätt distr., in Upper Bavaria.Bettina Stoll-Tucker Paperpack On the edge of the town Beilngries where the Sulz-valley meets the valley of Ottmaring an archaeological find site was discovered in 1983 and excavated until 1984. The cultural layers were slighty shifted towards the valley bottom and were preserved under a cover of sandy-loamy hill-wash. The volume deals with the two areas richest in finds, that are displayed in the catalogue. The material mostly consists of pottery. Stone tools, bone and metal objects were found as well. The area was inhabited by people of the Early Bronze Age that still very much adhered to traditions of the Late Neolithic. This phase is older than the common Early Bronze Age phase Bz A2/B1 and is called Reichersdorf group. Beside this early stratum there also is evidence for short-term use during the Middle Bronze Age. Stray finds come from all epochs between the Urnfield culture and modern times. The evidence for a single post structure could not be attributed to a certain time. It is most likely of Early Bronze Age date. Although the find circumstances are only partly informative, the special value of the site consists in the rare presence of the horizon at the change from Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age.
