Nußhausen.

An iron forge of modern times in the lower Altmühl valley.

Fred Otto Mahler

Paperpack

In 1981 an excavation revealed the remains of the former black-smithy at Nußhausen ["Kastlhof II"] near Kelheim in Bavaria. On a site of some 700 m² two distinct phases of buildings were found. The finds consisted of the material typical of a smithy in an agricultural-rural milieu, such as the smith´s tools, agricultural implements, a carpenter´s tools, scissors, cutlery, dress adornments, keys and locks, weapons and nails. The pottery was usually fired in an oxygen-rich atmosphere and coated with a brownish or greenish glaze. Oven-tiles, window glass and drinking glasses indicate a certain standard of living. The foundation of the smithy probably occurred in the 16th or 17th century, as indicates the absence of Medieval types. For the end of the smithy the author can quote written sources. The first building was destroyed by floods in 1784, the second was demolished in 1841, which is confirmed by the missing of younger finds. The author also discusses the variety of products and the economic importance of the black-smithy. Various aspects of the everyday life of the inhabitants are considered, as is the type of the smithy in its regional context. A catalog describes all objects found.
