The volume comprises a provisional appraisal of the archaeological features and finds along the route of the Main-Danube-canal excavated from 1976-1988. A chronological overview is followed by a consideration of the valley of the river Altmühl as a natural environment and settlement area before the construction of the canal. The different phases of canal building [Charlemagne, Ludwig-Danube-Main-canal, Main-Danube-canal] are discussed in separate summary sections. One chapter is dedicated to the position and dating of the 24 excavation sites in the area under investigation. A chronological part follows, which contains sections on the Middle and Late Palaeolithic [Prunn I], the Mesolithic [Canal II], the Neolithic [Lengfeld-Dantschermühle and Alkofen, Canal I, II, IV, Töging], the Bronze Age [Canal II, Prunn I, Thannhausen], the Urnfield Culture [Dietfurt-Schleuse, Canal I, II, Essing], the Hallstatt Culture [Canal I, Dietfurt, Prunn I, Riedenburg, Beilngries] and the Latène Period [Canal I, II, Prunn I, oppidum Kelheim]. The volume is finished by an appreciation of the special importance of the project, a literature list and an appendix of photographs.
