This catalogue of an exhibition held in Kelheim in 1987 under the same title is an attempt to illustrate the wide spectrum of mining and working of flint from a Bavarian point of view. A more general introduction on flint mining and knapping techniques (M. M. Rind) is followed by a paper on the recently completed excavations in the neolithic flint mine at Arnhofen near Kelheim (A. Binsteiner, B. Engelhardt). The raw material from this mining site can be found on numerous neolithic sites in the vicinity of the mine (A. Binsteiner, R. Pleyer). In a contribution from R. Pleyer and M. M. Rind, a Middle Neolithic burial from Mitterfecking near Kelheim is dealt with. A. Binsteiner reports on geo-electric deep sondages around the neolithic flint mine at Baiersdorf near Kelheim. Another neolithic flint mine existed in Schernfelder Forst near Eichstätt (A. Tillmann). Last but not least a discussion of the different techniques and methods of the deliberate production of stone tools follows (J. Weiner). A substantial and thematically arranged literature list and an index of authors are useful additions to the publication.
