The publication consists of two volumes and contains 23 papers given at the conference on "Rural settlement and agriculture in the Rhine-Danube-provinces of the Roman Empire" which was held at Passau from 16.-21. April 1991. Four contributions deal with the natural resources of the region, in particular with the pedology, climate, vegetation and domesticated animals. Three historical chapters concentrate on the information about the northern provinces obtainable from the ancient texts on agriculture, on the economy based on coloni and on the interrelation between towns and country-side. The remaining sixteen regional studies are dedicated to the archaeology of the rural occupation in Britain, Germania inferior [2 articles], Germania superior [3 articles], Raetia [3 articles], Noricum, Pannonia superior and inferior, Moesia superior, Moesia inferior [2 articles], Thrace [2 articles] and Dacia. The chapters on the Germaniae, Raetia, Pannonia inferior, Moesia inferior and Thrace are supplied with catalogues of Villae rusticae and other rural find sites. The second volume contains tables, distribution maps, ground-plans of buildings, maps of ancient fields etc. grouped by individual papers.
