Identification and classification of stone and bone artefacts.

An introduction to artefact morphology.

Joachim Hahn

Hardcover

Stone Age find sites contain a great wealth of information and hints on technology in the shape of stone, bone, antler and ivory artefacts. Because of different geological processes, it is necessary to exclude the natural origin of an object first. The recognized artefacts are then analysed with regard to the working sequence and reshaping processes that lead to their present shape. The book considers 15 types of raw materials and their distribution, mechanical fracturing, natural influences and thermic modifications, splitting techniques, blade production techniques, other flaking techniques, experimental blade production, classification systems for the basic production, modified stone artefacts such as core tools, flake tools, microliths, and Neolithic artefacts [arrow heads, daggers, harvesting knives, sickles], ten types of rock implements, splitting techniques for bone, antler, and ivory as well as tools made of bone, antler, and ivory [projectile points, harpoons, awls, needles, burnishers, batons, percussion and pressure tools, axes, spear throwers etc.]. The volume concludes with a substantial register.
