OUT OF PRINT [Last update: 19.07.2007] [ TMU 7,1 ] A Survey of the Pravara River System in Western Maharashtra, India.Volume 1: The Stratigraphy and Geomorphology of the Pravara River System. Gudrun Corvinus Hardcover During the excavation of a Chalcolithic mound at Nevasa on the lower Pravara river in 1954-1956, fossilised vertebrate bones and stone tools of the "Early and Middle Stone Age" were found in primary and secondary deposits and gave cause for the present investigations. Their first volume is based on several seasons of geological and geomorphological fieldwork on sections of Pleistocene and Holocene sediments in the Pravara river system. They revealed a system of Late Pleistocene-Early Holocene upper terraces and Late Holocene lower terraces with episodes of heavy rejuvenation by erosion and sedimentation, as can be seen from superimposed and infilled valleys and basins, waterfalls, and entrenched gorges. Their cause was not of a climatic but of a tectonic, probably an epirogenetic nature. In the lower course of the river system rich remains of Early Man were found in connection with Acheulian material, amongst this a fossilised old surface with numerous artefacts at Chirki, as well as in connection with a Nevasian flake industry and with microliths. The Chalcolithic occupation preceded the erosion phase of the Late Holocene.
