[Last update: 30.09.2009] [ MAN 41 ] Einbeck - Petersilienwasser.Features and structural evidence of the 13th to 20th centuries.
Stefan Teuber
Hardcover The origin and early development of the town of Einbeck between Göttingen and Hildesheim has hitherto been largely unknown, because all written evidence perished in a city-wide conflagration in A.D. 1540. Therefore, archaeological research is of utmost importance for the reconstruction of the city history and a local heritage preservation authority was established some 15 years ago, which supervised all building measures thereafter. The excavations in “Petersilienwasser“ quarter from 1996-2005, the largest city excavation at Einbeck so far, are of supra-regional significance for the whole of southern Lower Saxony and the Hanseatic League area because of its hitherto unique sequence of nine phases of dwelling architecture of a whole row of houses and a tithe estate from the mid 13th century onwards. Amongst the features of this waterlogged area with wood preservation there are houses, cloacae, hearths, tile stoves, industrial complexes, e. g. of shoemaking, tannery, and bakery, as well as graves. There is evidence for constructions with posts, sill-beams, and timber framing. Anthropological and palaeobotanical contributions complete the archaeological research.
