The present volume is the result of long-term investigations of a large group of Late Neolithic flint mines at various sites of western White Russia and the first attempt of a monographic account of this kind of archaeological monuments. The study deals with problems of social conditions, connected to the development of Late Neolithic mining, such as types of barter, the division of labour and the working conditions of miners. In particular, there is a discussion of the discovery and excavation of the mining sites, of the excavation method, of the situation and constructive elements of the pits, of the antler tools used, and of the lithic industry found. This is followed by a reconstruction of the mining process, an overview over prehistoric mines in the former Soviet Union and in other European countries, and the dating and ethno-cultural allocation of the prehistoric flint mines of White Russia. The book concludes with a catalogue of the mining installations at the sites of Krasnoselskij and Karpowzy, the distribution of flint material in the mining pits, a literature list and a mining glossary.
