The aim of this book, translated from the Czech, is to recreate the coherent and convincing world view and take on life of a medieval farmer by focussing a broad range of archaeological and historical facts down to the level of the single person. The figure of the ‘ploughman’ Ostoj was chosen because, of all of Bohemia’s medieval farmers, he is the only one of whom we have more detailed knowledge. This information is preserved as an insertion into a later document, a testament-like deed dating to between 1125 and 1140. Ostoj belonged to an economic complex owned by the church of Únětice/Aunjetitz and lived less than an hour’s walk from the Přemyslid castle at Levý Hradec near Prague. There, he tilled the fields, paid the church in Aunjetitz 12 denars yearly dues, looked after the garden in the back yard of his small farm and grazed his animals nearby. The volume is divided into 21 chapters dealing with different areas of life; in addition, it includes a bibliography of primary and secondary literature and extensive indices on persons, peoples, tribes and places, as well as literary and historical works.
