The economic foundations of the european Bronze Age.

Martin Bartelheim and Harald Stäuble (Eds.)

Hardcover

The volume goes back to the session of the Bronze Age Study Group at the conference of the North-West German Association of Archaeology in Hannover in 2004, which was supplemented by contributions of well-known authors on their individual areas of research. It makes quite clear that, unlike earlier assumptions, Bronze Age economy was not exclusively dominated by the production of agricultural goods and the fabrication of bronze. Rather it is obvious today for the majority of Europe from the Atlantic Ocean to the Carpathians and from Scandinavia to South Italy that a marked regional diversification of economic strategies existed. These were determined by local natural conditions and were directed towards the exploitation of specific local resources such as wood, amber, and flax in the case of organic raw materials and salt, rocks, and metals in the case of inorganic raw materials, which is, amongst other aspects, analysed in detail in eleven papers. Additionally, there are three regional studies from Central Europe dealing with particular questions of the use of resources there and its interdependence with the local settlement pattern.
