Bronze sheet metal votives from Giyimli.

Ertugrul Caner

Hardcover

The find from Giyimli in the territory of Urartu in the south-east of Lake Van was discovered in 1971. It had been deposited in a building and comprised many sheet metal pieces that had primarily been used as belt decoration and soon found their way into the antique trade. Fortunately a large number of them was documented in photographs before disappearing into private collections. While comparable pieces are usually found one by one, the presentation of this material complex together with Late Hittite, Assyrian and Iranian finds gives an overview of the whole species [814 objects]. The metal plates can be divided into 12 groups according to their decoration representing a standing god with or without symbol, a god on a lion, two gods opposed to each other, a standing female [mother or earth goddess ?] with or without symbol, two females opposed to each other, a god and a female, processions or banquets [plus varia and fragments]. The deity can be recognized by his clothing, posture of hands and hat type. According to the analysis of the total material he was mainly considered responsible for fertility, growth and keeping constant the number of stock.
