The Hittite building E on the Acropolis of Kuşaklı.

With a contribution by Angela von den Driesch

Hardcover

Building E in the Hittite city complex of Kuşaklı-Sarissa was excavated in 2000-2001 due to promising geophysical surveys in the north-east of the city centre. The author participated in these excavations. The building survived to one or even more layers of stones. The find material belongs to three phases: A very small part was deposited before the construction of building E. The great majority of finds come from phase 1 with a core building of 27 m in length, which rested on the underlying rock, existed from ca. 1500 B.C. until the 13th century B.C., and was abandoned systematically. It was filled with rich settlement waste of coarse pottery and animal bones in a secondary position, of which the pottery was studied in detail and shows close connections to layer 3 of the upper town of Boğazköy. A smaller amount of finds belong to phase 2 with an enlarged building of 12 m by 41 m, which is undated and was largely destroyed by later erosion an ploughing. Building E is situated on the acropolis and next to monumental building C, so that it may be considered a public building of unknown function.
