[Last update: 30.11.2009] [ AGO 7 ] Ship burial - cremation - chambered tomb. The Slavic cemeteries of Usedom in the context of Early and High Medieval funerary customs in Mecklenburg and Pomerania.
Felix Biermann
Hardcover The cemeteries of Usedom-“Am Hain“ and U.-“Priesterstraße“, distr. Ostvorpommern, were excavated in 1997 and 2000-2002. They are presented here and analysed against the background of Slavic burial customs of the 7th/8th to 12th/13th centuries. The focus is placed on building structures, burial rites, grave orientation, design of grave pits, recipients for the dead, and combinations of grave goods. The usually rare grave goods belong to 28 groups and are investigated with regard to typology, absolute dating, origin, and function and are confronted with parallels from the north-western Slavic and Scandinavian areas. Additionally, the dating, the mutual temporal relationship, the horizontal stratigraphy, and the social structure of the cemeteries are analysed [Am Hain: 195 inhumations, 2 cremations, end 10th-mid 12th century, Priesterstraße: 196 inhumations, 12th-mid 13th century]. Particular attention is paid to boats and parts of boats in graves, their technical and ritual character, and their connections with Scandinavia. The book ends with considerations of ethnical conditions and an attempt at interpreting the rich chambered tomb 135 from “Am Hain“.
