Mangelsdorf for his 60th birthday and contains a foreword by the editors, a eulogy [Schmidt], and a list of publications by the honoured. This is followed by 49 academic contributions and a list of authors. The papers are divided by chapters entitled history and theory of research [6 papers], from Germans to early Slavs [6], castles, rule, and power politics [11], towns [5], churches and their surroundings [7], Medieval craftsmanship [5] as well as trade, communication, and cultural exchange [9]. Some studies deal with particular finds such as belt hooks, snaffles, settlement pottery of the Roman Iron Age, and finds of the Vendel Age. Amongst the discussed castles are those of Zantoch, Klempenow, Posen / Poznań, Gützkow, and Wolgast. Towns referred to are Lübeck, Brandenburg, and Prillwitz. Churches, cemeteries, and vicarages taken into consideration are situated at Belzig, Kolberg / Kołobrzeg, Greifswald, Usedom, Eldena, Groß Zicker, and Diepensee. With regard to crafts, the economic development is considered as are pottery and mills. Other topics are navigation, figurines, coins, and an amulet and a ring with Hebrew inscriptions.
