This conference publication contains a thematic introduction [Schneider], 24 other academic contributions and a list of authors. The papers deal with churches in particular towns such as Hamburg, Lübeck, Wismar, Rostock, Stralsund, Greifswald, Plau am See, Lauenburg, Brandenburg an der Havel, Merseburg, Lüneburg and Höxter, but also in larger regions such as Pomerania. Special aspects of research are urban and ecclesiastical topography, the foundation, patron saints [e.g. Saint James, Paul, Nicholas, Thomas of Canterbury, Lambert, Peter], function, meaning, furnishing [e.g. altar decoration], construction history, building shape, archaeological features, and use of churches, the connections between Stralsund and the island of Rügen on the basis of different source material, the change of style and language on epitaphs and grave monuments, the library of the Geistliches Ministerium at Greifswald Cathedral, parish churches and public notaryship in the Late Middle Ages, the manuscripts of Mary‘s Church at Gdansk and their significance for the liturgy of the German Order, sunken sacristy rooms as well as changes to churches during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
