[Last update: 19.04.2007] Hardcover Small Tibetan metal pendants called Thogchags [Thog lcag = “flash iron“, also gNam lcag = “iron of heaven“] are considered products of flashes of lightning and are worn, kept and bequeathed as amulets against the rigours of the weather. Despite the implication of their name, they are not made from meteorite iron, but from copper alloys [bronze, brass]. Part 1 of the book deals with Tibetan sources and contributions such as the living past and present, amulets as mediators with the past, interviews, stories, fairy tales and myths, the use of Thogchags in Tibetan Medicine, and their etymology. Part 2 consists of the first extensive catalogue of its kind including descriptions of 1,072 objects from private collections and museums. Important types are rings, knots, mirrors, animals [dragons, wild cats, ungulates, amphibians, birds, fish etc.], Buddhist deities, ritual and votive objects [bells, daggers, mussel-shells, amulet containers etc.], miniature and everyday objects [household goods, tools, weapons, dress fasteners, jewellery, human figurines etc.]. This is followed by metal analyses, final remarks and a glossary.
