[Last update: 30.11.2009] [ MAB 2 ] The 'old town' of Freyenstein, district of Ostprignitz-Ruppin.A reconstruction of the abandoned 13th century Brandenburg town on the basis of archaeological excavation and Thomas Schenk Paperpack Based on earlier excavations, non-destructive research of the deserted town was carried out in 2000-04 by survey methods. A tachymeter survey was followed by geophysical measurement, mainly by geomagnetics on an area of 17.5 ha [70 %] and by ground penetrating radar. This resulted in the localization of numerous cellars and a previously unknown castle of the 13th century. Test excavation revealed both the good preservation and imminent destruction of the features. The systematic plotting of more than 9,000 surface finds provided important additional information on different pottery inventories in the castle and the town houses, the location of smithies, and the former existence of a brick building at the market [shop, town hall, church?]. Phosphate samples revealed the activity zones of Medieval farmsteads. The position of cellars indicated that streets and building blocks were arranged according to a perpendicular grit measured in feet and rods and partly surviving in modern field borders. The locations of church and churchyard remain unknown yet. The great importance of the evidence makes its museum presentation in the shape of an archeological park desirable.
