[Last update: 08.10.2009] [ BFA 2 ] Studies on Early Iron Age metalworking in the western Hallstatt and early La Tène area.Diana Modarressi-Tehrani Hardcover In the discussion about catalysts of the pre-Roman Iron Age in Central Europe, metallurgy plays an important role with regard to technology, specialization of craftsmen, social dependency, and social change. It the past few years it has become more and more obvious that the existing model of princely seats requires revision, because the evidence from sites such as Bragny-sur-Saône [F], Bourges [F], and Sevaz-Tudinges [CH] relativized existing parameters such as fortification, neighbouring barrows, import finds, and metal crafts. Therefore, remnants of metal production from the sites of Bragny, Dürrnberg, Heuneburg, and Hochdorf were analysed on the basis of objective criteria regarding specialization of craftsmanship, technological level, and production volume. By means of a synthesis including archaeological and ethnological evidence it was possible to demonstrate that a true specialization of crafts did not exist, that the technological level lagged far behind contemporary top-quality products, and that the production volume and grade of specialization remained comparatively low. Thus, one may assume that relatively autarkic migrant craftsmen dominated.
